Dyslexia Awareness Month October 2020: Let's Go Red For Dyslexia!
September and the new Autumn Term has arrived and so we continue to raise awareness about Dyslexia and what better way than to support #GoRedForDyslexia for October’s Dyslexia Awareness Week.
In 2012, my wife and I had suspicions that our daughter was struggling in school and that this could be something to do with dyslexia. The school initially were not going to provide extra support as my daughter was passing her subjects but what she wasn’t doing was meeting her potential and this was bothering her.
Skip forward to 2020 and Jess has just been awarded a first class honours degree. She got to this point because she had a diagnostic assessment of her needs, the school eventually put reasonable adjustments in place and she then thrived because her educational needs were more understood and more importantly met. So many children here in the UK are simply not that fortunate.
So I will happily endorse any campaign that puts dyslexia on the radar of those who should know more, especially within our education system.
The #GoRedForDyslexia campaign began last year during Dyslexia Awareness Month, October 2019. I supported it then and am pleased to announce that I am supporting this campaign through The Studying With Dyslexia Blog. All over the UK, we are hoping to see buildings lit up in red, people wearing red and organisations getting involved to promote understanding and awareness about dyslexia.
The campaign here in the UK is also raising money for the British Dyslexia Association on a mission to help people to understand what being dyslexic is like and to help those with dyslexia get the tools that they need to succeed.
In 2012, I wished that there was more awareness about dyslexia and more information available to sign post me, as a parent, in getting the right support for my daughter. I was lucky, I found the right information and everything turned out well, but that isn’t the case for everyone and I want to continue to raise awareness, understanding and more importantly promote positive interventions that help children to meet their potential.
