Useful blogs for Dyslexic students: The Sonocent Blog
There is a wealth of useful content available for Dyslexic students who want to continue to educate themselves on how dyslexia affects their studying. For undergraduates where there is access to the Disabled Students Allowance and assistive technology, suppliers of software are taking a more supportive approach to their marketing by sharing meaningful information that helps. One company in particular is note taking company, Sonocent who share useful content via their blog.
I have had the pleasure to get to know this company that is known for helping undergraduate students, who struggle with focus and concentration, take notes in lectures effectively. Now there are a number of companies out there that will claim to do the same thing and I am not going to judge who is the best etc, but what I do want to bring to your attention is Sonocent’s blog which seeks to educate students about the academic and personal challenges associated with note taking.
In reading their blog, I have been pleased to see content that does not seek to sell their product, but seeks to inform readers about note taking and share their expertise in this space. Whether you intend to buy their product or not, you will find that their blog is a useful reference.
Reviewing The Sonocent Blog.
When you look at the Sonocent Blog the first thing that you see is that the articles are not about their product. The articles are about life being a student with a Specific Learning Difficulty and related topics.
An article that resonates strongly with my work as a life coach is “How Anxiety & Depression Affect Students”
In this article, the writer, Luke Garbutt, explores how anxiety and depression can affect the academic capabilities of a student. This is a topic that I am passionate about because I know that if a student is anxious about life at college, then being able to study when feeling this way is hugely difficult and often a strategic perspective should be taken in counteracting the effects of anxiety and depression through appropriate support as well as effective study skills support.
In another article, “Independent Learning & Disability”, Luke goes on to explore the challenges of independent learning and how disability impacts this and what should be done within Higher Education to support the independent learning process.
In the article, “How Technology Helps Students With Anxiety And Depression Achieve Independence”, Sonocent uses their product as an example as this illustrates their point and showcases their skill set and experience but there is learning here that can be applied to the life of a dyslexic student.
As someone who loves assistive technology for helping with studying, I like any company that seeks to reach out to students with dyslexia in a way that helps, regardless of whether or not they get a sale of their software. Sonocent is one of those companies that I believe add value to their blog readers. As to engaging with their product, Audio Notetaker, that is totally up to you.
