When someone says, “I have dyslexia,” the response is often predictable.
“Do you get your letters backwards?”
“Does that mean you can’t read?”
“Are you just bad at spelling?”
These are some of the most common misconceptions about dyslexia. Whilst difficulties with reading, writing and spelling are often the most visible characteristics, they only tell part of the story. Dyslexia is far more complex than literacy alone.
For parents, understanding dyslexia can help explain why everyday tasks can be more challenging for their child. For teachers, it provides the knowledge needed to remove barriers, adapt teaching and help every learner reach their full potential.
Dyslexia Is More Than Reading and Spelling

The current Delphi Consensus Definition provides a clearer understanding of dyslexia and the underlying difficulties that many people experience.
It explains that dyslexia:
- is a set of processing difficulties that affect the acquisition of reading and spelling
- affects reading fluency and spelling across all languages
- exists on a continuum and varies from person to person
- is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors
- may also affect mathematics, reading comprehension and learning another language
- commonly involves difficulties with phonological processing, including phonological awareness, phonological processing speed and phonological memory
- may also involve difficulties with working memory, processing speed and orthographic skills
- frequently co occurs alongside dyscalculia, ADHD, Developmental Language Disorder and Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)
Understanding these processing differences helps us move away from outdated myths and towards a more accurate picture of dyslexia.
What Does This Mean in Everyday Life?
Definitions are helpful, but what do they actually look like in real life?
For many dyslexic people, the challenge is not intelligence or motivation.
The challenge is processing information.
Tasks that appear simple for others often require much greater mental effort.
For example, someone with dyslexia may find it difficult to:
- remember several instructions at once
- organise their thoughts before writing
- retrieve words quickly during conversation
- spell familiar words consistently
- read fluently without losing meaning
- remember sequences or routines
- process information at speed
These challenges can happen every day, whether at school, at home or in the workplace.
Phonological Processing
One of the most significant underlying difficulties in dyslexia is phonological processing.

As a result, information can quickly become overloaded.
This is why a child may understand something one minute but appear to have forgotten it the next. It is not because they were not listening or were not trying. The information simply could not be held long enough for it to be processed effectively.
Providing written instructions, visual prompts and breaking learning into smaller steps can make an enormous difference.
Processing Speed
Processing speed is another area that can affect learning.
Some dyslexic learners need longer to process written or spoken information before they can respond.
This does not mean they know less.
It simply means they need additional time to think.
