Three tips for parents who want to get what their dyslexic child needs to unlock attainment.
This article is important to you if you are a parent feeling disempowered to enact change that will help your dyslexic child to improve their attainment at school.
As a therapeutic counsellor and parent coach, one of the most common discoveries that my clients find is how much time they have wasted in getting what their children need to be their best at school, due to their own lack of confidence, poor self-esteem and simply not knowing that they have the power to lead the process of change in their children’s lives.
What do I mean?
Within the context of Parenting Dyslexia, I am referring to the often constant struggle to work with the school to help a dyslexic child unlock attainment.
Some parents, know that there is a struggle and they don’t like it, but feel powerless to do anything about it. Meanwhile the clock is ticking and the parent/teacher ‘partnership’ isn’t getting the child what they need.
So often as parents we don’t believe that we have any power to enact change when the reality is (in many cases), we really do, but we don’t automatically have the mindset to take control of the situation. We, understandably, look to the school to take the lead and as a result, depending upon the school’s approach to dyslexia support, end up feeling like our child’s attainment is at the mercy of the part of the Education System that they learn in.

If you feel disempowered, then it is time to change this and to start thinking about your approach to working with your child’s teaching professionals as you get closer to the commencement of the Autumn Term.
Here are some useful tips for enacting change…
Change your mindset.
Be the leader of the process of getting support rather than be led and feel like you are getting nowhere.
Give yourself some time to stop and think about what is holding back the provision of support for your child.
Is there something that you need to change to help this to happen?
Think about your relationship with your child’s teaching professionals.
Is it a good working partnership or an unhealthy stalemate that is leaving your child hanging and feeling miserable at school?
