Why is learning spellings such a difficult process for children with dyslexia and what can we do about this? Read on to download my latest infographic about dyslexia and spellings.
In a recent article I shared some thoughts about strategies for spelling tests and then I read an awesome blog article from Understood.org that explored the learning and thinking differences that cause trouble with spelling.
One aspect of strategies for supporting the learning of spellings that I think is woefully not utilised in schools is the use of a multisensory approach to learning spellings.
This article has been sponsored by touch typing company, KAZ-Type and in a recent discussion with them they told me how important it was to engage the senses when learning spellings. In their most recent update on their online typing tutor for families, parents are now able to upload spellings from class into KAZ-Type and the child is able to practise typing out those spellings. The advantage in doing this is that the brain makes a connection between the use of touch and the cognitive processes of learning spellings. I like to think of this as creating ‘hooks’ with information that someone with dyslexia can rely on to be able to refer to whilst writing out their spellings. It would be similar to making letters out of plasticine or drawing pictures of words.
As a result of what I have read and my discussions, I really wanted to share a summary of my learning with you and I thought that I would put together an infographic that you can download and print off.
The Infographic illustrates what is happening in the brain when learning spellings, the challenges for a child with learning spellings and some strategies that are helpful.
