Many people think of Dyslexia as a ‘one size fits all’ condition. It is simply not. So check out this collection of resources from a leading college who support dyslexic learners and see what they say about co-occuring conditions and how to support them.
At time of writing it is the 1st October 2021, the first day of Dyslexia Awareness Month. This is a time of doing everything we can to help people to understand the strengths and weaknesses that come with having a dyslexic brain. So many people focus on the downsides and so often make assumptions about people with dyslexia and how it affects them.
The reality is that the experience of dyslexia is different for each person with dyslexia, but there are common experiences that often people do not consider to a greater or lesser degree. These include Dyscalculia (maths difficulties and more extreme challenges associated with numbers and quantity), slow processing, poor focus and attention as well as speech and language skills.
If the idea of dyslexia is new to you especially if you are supporting a child or student then it is worth reading about these challenges and knowing what can be done to support the learning of a dyslexic thinker.
St David’s College in Llandudno’s Cadogan Centre is a leading SEN focused team supporting students with dyslexia and they share their expertise to other schools.
