Fun and enjoyment are important in creating a supportive environment and delivering more effective teaching. Helping learners to read and spell through the positive engagement of playing games will reduce stress, enhance concentration and develop social skills.
A multi-sensory approach, using a structured, cumulative learning technique, with plenty of opportunity for vital repetition, will support learners to acquire new words and build confidence.
In 2023, The National Literacy Trust published research which shows that over half of children and young people aged 8 – 18 don’t enjoy reading in their free time. So, it is more important than ever to help learners find fun in reading and spelling from an early age.
Games are a great way to positively change struggling learners’ relationship with reading and spelling. With the aim of addressing these challenges, a specialist dyslexia teacher (Dip SpLD Level 7) developed a range of reading and spelling games.
There are five packs of graded phonic cards, starting at the consonant-vowel-consonant level, progressing to vowel and consonant digraphs, including the gradual introduction of suffixes. In each ‘Got it’ set there are five different reading and spelling games teaching five new sounds. This ‘pick up and go’ resource is ideal for one-to-one or small group literacy interventions. It is also a valuable resource for parents/carers and tutors to support classroom learning.
The games are quick to learn, suitable for age five and over and take about 10 minutes to play. In line with the National Curriculum, the games teach important, frequently used words. They are multi-sensory and dyslexia friendly, with the focus sounds shown in blue, a dyslexia friendly font and picture prompt cards to give learners the confidence to read and spell independently.
