In this article I will share with you a tip that the dyslexic learner in your family can use to take better notes in class, be able to remember more and improve grades, all by using technology that your leaner is probably already using. This tip will make note taking less stressful, more enjoyable and make learning more engaging.
I am exploring different ways to taking notes more effectively. I remember when I was a student, note taking was slow, I missed a tonne of information and when I was alone studying at home using those notes I often felt stuck as my notes didn’t quite make sense but after a particular lesson or lecture my only link to the teaching were my notes! With insufficient notes came anxiety and then that affected my ability to process information.
With the co-occuring difficulties that can come with dyslexia such as poor working memory, poor concentration, lack of focus and attention as well as physical discomfort when writing notes using a pen, it would be no surprise that the use of technology could be a welcome opportunity to level the playing field.
That said we need to be able to use technology effectively to get the best result. What’s the point of recording a lecture and then listening to the whole lecture again it is going to waste time.
I recently recorded a podcast episode on this exact topic and I would like to share it with you. In the podcast I share a really simple tip for how to record lessons / lectures and use that recording to your advantage in terms of boosting learning, revision and recall.
If you are already using the tip that I shared in the podcast then you may well be able to take your note taking to a more efficient level by using assistive technology that is designed for the purpose. One example is Glean from Sonocent and currently they are providing a free trial of their software. I would be interested to hear from you as to what you think about it.
