Recently I interviewed Darius Namdaran from the Bulletmap Academy about his work helping dyslexic learners to get all that wonderful creativity out of their heads and into essays without all of the feelings of overwhelm that often hold them back.
I recently had a call from a parent who told me about their child who was facing the prospect of writing an essay. The child new what they needed to say, they had the learning, but when faced with getting it down on paper the feelings of overwhelm caused a complete mental block.
From the outside looking in the child is clearly intelligent and knows their ‘stuff’ but seems reluctant to engage with the work.
This scenario is so common for dyslexic thinkers, so it makes sense to address this experience with strategies that can reduce overwhelm. The more we as teachers or parents can reduce the stress and anxiety of writing coursework the more the child is likely to be able to express their creativity and learning.
In watching the video below you will gain some actionable strategies for helping your child to express their learning with creative writing or written coursework.
